LGBTQIA+ History Month
February is LGBTQIA+ history month. Why does this matter? Last year I heard someone ask why pride matters. It might seem like there’s nothing left to advocate for. That queer folks have all the rights they need. Well, I’m not straight. This means that in 64 countries, I break the law simply by existing. In 11 of those countries, I would face the death penalty. In 11 countries, myself and many of my closest friends, would be killed for simply being who we are. So yes, LGBTQIA+ history matters, as does pride.
The Mind-Body Connection - How Stress Impacts Your Skin
As an eczema and TSW warrior, I’m all too aware of the many, many remedies available for skin conditions. How much money we all spend trying to find that one miracle product. When the reality is that skincare often only focuses on external treatments and regimens. Of course, these play an important part and finding the right product can bring much needed relief. However, the profound connection between our mental health and our skin, means that we need to address not just the skin, but our minds too.
Parents Mental Health Day
The role of a parent is always filled with complex emotions. Largely, a deep-rooted desire to ensure the well-being and happiness of their child. These responsibilities and expectations increase when caring for someone with skin conditions. For this year's Parents Mental Health Day, I’ve partnered up with Eczema Clothing. Here I discuss the importance of parents prioritising their mental health, while caring for children with skin conditions.
Let’s Talk: Skin Picking
An issue that often accompanies skin conditions is dermatillomania. A mental health condition where someone picks, rubs, pulls, or scratches at their skin. Usually compulsively, and causing injury. This skin picking disorder can be associated with OCD, or be a learnt habit from a skin condition. It’s not often discussed. I don’t see it mentioned much on social media. I think this is because it’s shrouded in misunderstanding and stigmatization. Most people who suffer with it do so secretly, with embarrassment and fear of judgement. I know I did. Therefore, it’s important to address this often-neglected side of skin conditions. Let's start to disrupt the stigmatization and feelings of isolation.
Resolutions or Hibernation?
Previously I’ve seen January as a fresh start for new goals. A way to jump into the year with new motivation and energy. ‘Start as you mean to go on’ and all that. This year I’ve opted for a different mindset. Easing into the new year with gentle patience and a lot of napping.
